I've been working with expert survivors of severity like Johanna for years. I connected with Johanna more recently when she replied to a post I made in a Facebook group on the subject of transformative mutual aid practices, seeking collaborators to help inform communities and rally support for people facing unnecessary and deeply unjust death, coercion, silencing, discrediting, and other forms of dehumanization.
Out of over 1000 people in the group, only Johanna was able to make sense of what I was asking for -- help with 'complex communication' among people from different social positions, backgrounds and situations, to elicit more engagement in transforming complex emergencies and coordinating safe accessible sanctuary residences for survivors of severity.
This doesn't have to mean direct involvement -- it can simply mean learning to understand and helping others understand so they may be able to help, with resources, advocacy, assistance or various forms of collaboration.
The Creative Interventions Toolkit (https://creative-interventions.org/toolkit/), written in the language of responding to violence, shows there are many ways for collaboration to work in response to many kinds of challenging situations.
So many people have nowhere to turn for safety from harm by others + healing from severe compounded trauma and often-overlapping physical illness and injuries.
Hospitals are extremely inhospitable environments for survivors of severity for many reasons; most professionals don't want to deal with people with complex problems that demand more effort to understand and help. Even if they want to help, they often don't have much time -- and 'cut corners' by sending people away, 'blaming the victim', and locking people up in traumatic institutions if all else fails.
The same applies to 'survivor services' like the organizations that run interpersonal violence shelters and the overlapping anti-trafficking 'ecosystem.' These 'worlds' are based on helping people who have simpler, more easily-addressed problems. It's easier to put out 'efficacy statistics' to funders about helping more people and let the others 'fend for themselves.'
Often this results in people having nowhere to turn but trying to get help from people and organizations, including professionals and family members, who don't want to help, or give up when the going gets tough rather than figuring out what's going on, speaking up, and collaborating to do something about it.
Existing service structures have not been designed to address complexity and apparently 'impossible problems' in the way that is crucially needed.
When we build the necessary solutions together, we have different and better results. Instead of strings of the usual hopelessly compounding emergencies… we have strings of unique and meaningful successes.
